2. The Core

The Tunnel

Protect the flow once it starts.

Clear direction lets a team go deep. The Tunnel is the protection that keeps it there.

The principle

Give a person pure clarity and explicit boundaries, and they stop scanning for what might be missing. They go deep instead. That state is the Tunnel, and it is where the best work happens.

The Tunnel is a protected scope of work: a project of the right shape. It has an entrance, an exit and walls. Every principle in the core is part of it:

  • The Lens finds the entrance. Is this tunnel worth digging, and where does it come out? That is The Clarity Contract.
  • The Accelerator is how you travel. Car, train or on foot: the path can change, the destination cannot. That is Rigid Mobility.
  • The Shield holds the walls and keeps the team inside, and safe, until it reaches the exit.
  • The exit is the Definition of Done. A tunnel with no exit is not protected work. It is a trap.

What it asks

  • One way in for change. A new request enters through the Change Forum, as a trade-off with an owner, or it does not enter.
  • Walls that hold under pressure. Scope is frozen during execution. Urgency is a reason to use the Change Forum, not to skip it.
  • An exit that exists before the entrance is used. No Definition of Done, no tunnel.
  • A structural way to say no. Protecting focus should not cost the person inside the tunnel their own energy.

The test

The test

Once work has started, can a new request reach the team without passing the Change Forum?

If it can, the tunnel has a side door. Every request that uses it is paid for in focus by the people inside.

What a leaking tunnel looks like

  • The direct message that starts with "quick question" and reopens the scope.
  • A reprioritisation announced in the stand-up instead of decided in a forum.
  • Five fires a day, each urgent, none of them the work.
  • The project that never ends, because nobody wrote down where it ends.

In the product

The Shield enforces the walls: scope freeze during execution, stop-work triggers when a boundary moves without a trade-off, and the Change Forum as the only way in. Why this matters most for neurodivergent minds is in Neurodivergent Performance.

The Promise
Clarity in, focus out.
